Hello. This is slightly off topic for this blog. But I have just finished my first book of photos and got my copies last night. It’s called “Roots: 7 Days” and is a series of 28 photos taken in a seven day stretch in the US, where I’m from, in February. I’m about to say the most I’ve said about it ever publicly…
There is very little context provided in the book itself apart from the photos. The theme is a journey and going back in time and my history, but also seeing it through the eyes of my son. It’s kind of bleak and heavy, but also offers glimpses of hope, humour and survival.
I made the book with a lot of involvement from Megan Turner-Jones, Kevin Mason of Create and Kate Benjamin.
“Roots: 7 Days” can be viewed at the 21a Brunswick Square Artists Open House along with the work of 10 other amazing artists starting today and on each weekend through the Brighton Festival.
We are in isle of wight when this photo was taken and the gun isn’t real. It is a cap gun. yes it is mummy. innit? ha ha ha. Yes it is yes it is no it is. Hey why are you laughing? Stop that is my line. Now ha ha ha to you too. Hey why am I just having my own conversation? Sorry about that, hey stop it sorry. So bye. Oy I think that is how you spell it (not oi). You stop it mummy, sorry bye now ok.
My name is John Doe and I am a Moshi-holic.
So the one which is green is called Ecto.
The one that is on the far right is called Rocky.
The one that looks like a cat is called Waldo.
And the starfish’s name is Fumble.
And I might get more moshlings.
If you know what my hair looks like lately, watch this video.
My cat
On Monday I went to the vet because my cat had a blood clot in its legs that meant he couldn’t walk. I was very sad because there was a cure but if we cured him he still would not be able to walk. The vet told us that we should give him the jab that makes him go to sleep for ever. I will miss him he was a good cat.
“I don’t really believe in God.”
Today was Victorian day at school, the whole day they pretended to be in Victorian times. From how they dressed to how they were punished (oh yes, the cane) to gender specific and segregated lessons. That’s a pretty edgy line to walk for a school I guess.
One of the routines of the day (at the time) was daily prayers, he told me. And when it came time to say them, he said “I saw that it was all about God stuff and everything and so I just decided not to say them. Because I don’t really believe in God.” Also, it was pretty rubbish not seeing the girls ALL DAY LONG. Apparently.

Things that are good that don’t cost money…
We were talking about how it’s chilly out tonight and I said I almost want to turn the heating on. M said “but let’s not because it costs money and it’s not that cold”.
So I said well everything kinda costs money. But then M said, actually not everything does.
So we made a list of things that are good but don’t cost money:
1. A walk on the beach (E)
2. Looking at someone (M)
3. Going to the toilet (M) - but on further thought, actually it sometimes does…
4. Farting (both)
5. Listening to the radio (E)
6. Reading (M)
7. Being crazy (M)
8. Doing this blog (M)
9. Sleeping (E)
10. School (M)

This is not the sort of quick snapshot a child lets you take in passing. It took time, it’s an old camera, it’s film. He allowed it. He gave it to me. He understood that I wanted it to be special.
Don’t you think it is, too?
Our friend Kevin Meredith (Lomokev) blogged us. How nice :)
